History of the Memorial

Ron Hancock, the president of the association designed and arranged for the memorial to be placed in the pavement outside St Peter’s Church. The memorial, consisting of a black polished granite slab with gold leaf lettering cost £800, paid for by fund raising events organised by the association. Burringham’s Stone Masons of Grimsby & Scunthorpe built the memorial to and on 3rd March, 1996, the stone was placed in the pavement outside the church. A service was conducted by the Rev M.F. Jones, OSt J and Rev. T.H. Robinson CBE, in the presence of the Mayor of Cleethorpes  Margaret Cracknell and the Defence Attaché of Korea Major I. Jung, where Rev. T.H. Robinson dedicated and unveiled the stone.

By 2003, Albert ‘Bill’ Clark of Cleethorpes realised that the stone was becoming damaged by persons walking over it, the lettering was becoming dirty and showing signs of wear, so with Ron Hancock and assistance of local Council, had the stone removed from the pavement and placed on a polished granite plinth, which was fixed in the ground near to the wall of the church, standing in an upright position. This moving of the stone was carried out on 16th February 2003, at a cost of £150. The memorial was re-dedicated by Rev. David Peacock, the rector of Cleethorpes and a service was held at the church accompanied by members of the association.
