Memorial to the 3rd Manchester Regiment

(TA 298082)

The cemetery in Cleethorpes, North East Lincolnshire, is situated to the west of Beacon Avenue, which runs between Clee Road and Taylor’s Avenue. Entry can be gained to the cemetery by way of Normanby Road and from a walkway off Beacon Avenue close to its junction with Trinity Road. This walkway can be used by vehicles for the purpose of going to the cemetery only. The walkway divides the two halves of the cemetery, the half on the right, the older section, contains the two war memorials, of which this is one, a memorial to the 31 members of the 3rd Manchester Regiment who died in a zeppelin raid on April 1st, 1916. The memorial is to the rear of the cemetery, close to the boundary fence with some allotments.

Inscriptions

This memorial consists of a grassy mound 3100mm x 4300mm x 400mm high, on which is placed are three panels of York Stone, with the names of 31men who died in a zeppelin raid on Cleethorpes on April 1st 1916. The panels are on a brick base and a stone cross stands on top of the central panel. The panels measure 850mm x 640mm and the cross is 2500mm high.  There is a flower bed in the centre of this mound, which at time of survey was full of flowering geraniums. At the front of grassy mound is a square stone block measuring 530mm x 430mm. Within this and mounted on the stone is a white stone shield, which describes the events on the 1st April 1916, and gives the reason for the memorial. This white stone shield is in poor condition and difficult to read. The whole memorial sits within an area of lawn 27000mm x 10000mm, which was where the 31 men were buried.
