Location

The RAF North Cotes Roll of Honour is no longer at RAF North Cotes but in the foyer of Cleethorpes Town Hall, Knoll Street, Cleethorpes, close to the junction with Cambridge Street. Access can be gained only during weekdays by way of the main reception desk at Cleethorpes Town Hall, North East Lincolnshire. The receptionist will then arrange for the caretaker to open the main front door of the old Town Hall, which is only opened by a coded lock. At weekends a special arrangement would have to be made.

Inscription

The Roll of Honour commemorates the Second World War only. The names of personnel who died are arranged by date order, starting on 15th April, 1940, and going through the 5 years of war listing the daily losses, giving the date of loss, the rank, initials and surname of personnel, any medals awarded, their unit and squadron. The squadrons represented are 22, 812, 42, 86, 53, 59, RCAF 407, 236, 143, 254.  Some of the men came from Royal Canadian Air Force squadron 407 and 236. One or two were Free French, others were USAF, HQ/6 group; altogether some 511 names are listed altogether on 2 wooden boards, each 1870mm tall x 970mm wide. There  are 268 names on Board 1 and 253 names on Board 2. Some of the names have been only recently added, including a group from 1944. This is evident by the change in colour of the black background and slightly different shade of gilt paint.

On the wall of the foyer, over and around the two wooden boards are the badges of the squadrons represented

Between the 2 wooden boards depicting the Roll of Honour are the badges of RAF North Coates

The inscription on the top plaque reads

“Presented to the Mayor and Corporation of the Borough of Cleethorpes by RAF North Coates on 30th April 1959”

Below these badges is a plaque dedicated to Free French officer
